Freeez-IOU [1983]

Freeez-IOU [1983]

UK dance group with one of my favorite tracks of all-time. Written by dance remix legend, Arthur Baker, this song was #1 for 2 weeks on the Billboard dance charts and as I recall a break beat favorite. Heavy rotation in my car and home.

Savatage-The Dungeons are Calling [1984]

Savatage-The Dungeons are Calling [1984]

My best friend back then was a serious metalhead and there were a few songs that stayed with me. Brothers Jon and Criss Oliva and Keith Collins were the founding members of Savatage in 1983. They started out being a cross between heavy metal and speed metal and ultimately becoming one of the first progressive metal bands using symphonic instrumentals as their trademark from then on. This is an excellent song.

DEVONE - Energy - 1996

Devone-Energy [1995]

Not much to say about this artist, he had a short lived career with maybe another song that made it's way onto a house compilation, but this is an excellent house track and for those that need a song for the mp3 as you exercise, this is it. It's off the Mercury label, from 1995.

Alicia Myers-I want to thank you [1981]

Alicia Myers-I want to thank you [1981]

Off her debut solo album in 1981, here is, IMO, the funkiest gospel/soul tune ever. I still haven't heard someone sample that opening beat correctly in a rap song. Contagious beat, another track that stays in heavy rotation in the car/home/mp4.

Cinderella-Heartbreak Station [1990]

Cinderella-Heartbreak Station [1990]

A fan favorite from this "metal" glam band off their same titled third album, which went gold in January 1991 and platinum in February. This album marked a change of direction in their music as they shifted towards a more blues type of style and losing quite a bit of fans along the way.

Traks-Long Train Running [1983]

Traks-Long Train Running [1983]

Here's a group that had the metal look but they were actually a electronic/disco band. This is off their only [at least as far as I could find] and same titled LP. The original, of course, is a classic from the Doobie Brothers but I like this version better. The vocals are more to my liking and they funked it up so it reaches the dancing crowd as well. The singer in the video is Aax Donell but he's just a lip syncher. The real vocals are by band member, Douglas Meakin, who never made a public appearance with the band. Why?? No idea and there's very little info on the net about this short lived band.

Prince-Controversy [1981]

Prince-Controversy [1981]

Off his same titled 4th album, here's a definite classic from a true musical genius. It's an answer to the media who at that point was questioning his sexuality, religious beliefs, etc...At that point in time, I couldn't really appreciate him as I do now as I was a loyal Michael Jackson fan and back then there was always the who was the better dancer, singer...These days he has my total respect as a complete artist.

Black Ivory-Mainline [1979]

Black Ivory-Mainline [1979]

Here's an R&B group from Harlem who had some hits in the 70's [Larry Blackmon, front man from Cameo would be their most recognizable member, though here he played the drums ]but faded due to the fact that disco became dominant and they were not able to compete successfully in that genre. That said, here's their last hit "Mainline", that in my opinion, is just as good or even better than a lot of the disco that I've heard. Thanks to tpj1965 for reminding me of this classic.

Patti Austin & James Ingram-Baby come to me [1983]

Patti Austin & James Ingram-Baby come to me [1983]

This is R & B, classic soul. Artists just do not get down like this anymore, in my opinion. When/What was the last R&B duet that can be considered a classic? This can be found on each ones' greatest hits hits compilations. It went to # 1 in 1983 and remains in heavy rotation on any lite music station and around my house.

Donny Osmond-C'mon Marianne [1976]

Remake of a Four Seasons song that originally went to # 9 on the charts in 1967 and 10 years later, Donny took it to # 25 on the pop charts. It can be found on Donny's "Disco Train" album or on his greatest hits compilation.

Bubba Sparxxx-Ugly [2001]

Bubba Sparxxx-Ugly [2001]

Off his certified gold (at least 500,000 copies) debut album n 2001, Dark Days Bright Nights, here's a white rapper from the deep south [LaGrange, Georgia-best known as a tourist attraction for bass fishermen] with the single that introduced him to the hip hop world, going to # 15 on the pop charts. Timbaland on beats.

Change-Hold Tight [1981]

Change-Hold Tight [1981]

Off their second album, Miracles, here's a very good track that went to #40 on the R&B charts. Luther Vandross sang back up on this album, then took off for a solo career that we all know about. I can't find an original video so I made one up so people can at least listen to it.

Inner City-Power of Passion [1989]

Inner City-Power of Passion [1989]

This is off their first album, Paradise/Big Fun, in 1989. It had great success in the U.S., having 4 tracks that went to #1 on the dance charts. This is an excellent ballad that gets lost on this album because of classics like Big Fun and Good Life. I never heard it on the radio but it deserves to be shared and listened to. I did a homemade video to it so you guys can listen and enjoy it.

Queen-Another one bites the dust [1980]

Queen-Another one bites the dust [1980]

Angry funk from this British pop/rock crew, off their 1980 multi-platinum album The Game. This track earned them their only Grammy nomination. Excellent track, the kind that transcends genres. Proof?? It went to #1 on the pop charts AND #2 on the R&B charts at the same time. Here's a bit of interesting trivia. The group didn't even think about releasing this as a single until Michael Jackson suggested it after one of their concerts.

Madonna-Justify my love [1990]

Madonna-Justify my love [1990]

The first single off the Immaculate Collection album and it went to reaching as high as #1 in some countries and #2 in several others. This song was composed by Lenny Kravitz, Madonna and one time Prince-protege, Ingrid Chavez. Kravitz kept Ingrid's name out of the credits and then had to pay a large out-of-court settlement as Ingrid had written the majority of this song. That added to the controversy of this single as it was one of the first videos to be banned from Mtv and subsequently became the highest selling video single of all time. A laid back track with seducing music and Madonna whispering and sighing the verses.
