Personal items belonging to screen legend Marilyn Monroe, including her personal address book and a pair of stockings, were sold for more than one million US dollars, auctioneers said.

More than 200 items, including a picture of a rose that the late actress painted for US president John F Kennedy, went under the hammer yesterday for nearly 1.04 million US dollars, more than three times the expected haul.

"It was the chance of a lifetime," said Darren Julien of Los Angeles auction house, Julien's Auctions, which organised the sale of items of the Hollywood star who committed suicide nearly 43 years ago.

"There will never be another auction of this sort. This sale was a great success. Marilyn is as successful as she was 43 years ago," Julien said.

Monroe's personal address book was sold for a staggering 90,000 US dollars, while a watercolour painting of a rose by Monroe inscribed to Kennedy sold for 78,000 US dollars.

The canvas of the painting carried the inscription: "President Kennedy, Happy Birthday and again I say Happy Birthday. Always, Marilyn Monroe, June 1, 1962."

Monroe, who died of a drug overdose on August 5, 1962 at the age of 36, was said to have had an affair with both John F Kennedy and his brother Bobby.

A pair of fishnet stockings that belonged to the blond bombshell who would have turned 79 last week sold online for USD 2,750, while a Kashmir cardigan sold for USD 2,000.

The auction was arranged by Monroe's estate which decided to sell 298 pieces of clothing, luggage, personal papers and even bra pads used by Monroe.

Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie has financed a documentary that has people all over the world simultaneously capturing events as they occur during a three-minute timeframe.

Jolie, who has adopted Cambodian orphan Maddox, came up with the idea for "A Moment In The World" after realising how contrasting her travels have been in recent years, celebrity portal Femalefirst reported.

She said: "I kept going between Mad's country and refugee camps or war zones to Hollywood and all these odd places and then seeing the world at all these different times.

"Then it became this kind of crazy adventure of organising a lot of people and gathering over 30 crews of people and sending them across the world to all these places," she said.

"On January 11, we all opened up our cameras at the exact same time, coordinated across the world for three minutes."

Pamela Anderson's fund raiser angers Hindus


A fund-raiser for AIDS organised in Canada's largest city has snowballed into a controversy after the South Asian community alleged "misrepresentation" of Hindu deities in the event's marketing material.

"Two cultures collide for one great cause" was the tagline to promote the East meets West theme at Fashion Cares 19th fund-raising annual gala organised by the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT).

But the event turned into a collision course after several South Asian community organisations protested the "misrepresentation" of Hindu deities.

"ACT knowingly committed this offence and now expects the community to be satisfied with a simple apology and dismiss the issue," Tushar Unadkat of New Indian Dimension of Entertainment and Arts (Nouveau IDEA) said.

He said several offensive flyers and postcards were made available at the venue. Some of the advertising material including the one at the centre of the controversy - a sexualised and exotic woman seated in a goddess pose - is still floating online, he said.

According to the ACT, the theme was originally chosen as a way to explore the interaction of two cinematic genres - Bollywood and Hollywood westerns.

In a press statement, ACT apologised for "not consulting more broadly when ideas were originally being developed for the Fashion Cares theme".

The organisation said it was committed to continuing "our broad-based consultations with different ethno-cultural and other stakeholder communities to inform our HIV prevention and support activities".

About 5,000 guests including celebrities attended the $350 per person event on June 4. Canadian actress Pamela Anderson hosted this year's event.

Unadkat said: "This is a major and deliberate act that warrants more than just a simple apology."

Though ACT agreed to withdraw the provocative material, it had failed to do so, neglecting the sensitivity of the issue, according to the protesters.

The Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention (ASAAP), the first organisation to speak up against the event, said lack of consultations at the organisational level with community groups led to the turn of events.

"We believe that it is critical to actively work with and within the ethno-racial communities that are featured at such events," a statement from the organisation said.

"The solution to this insensitive behaviour is for ACT to organise a mainstream significant event in which Hindu religious leaders and educators can spread awareness about Hindu deities to avoid such callous treatment of our faith in future," Unadkat suggested.

Recognised internationally as one of the leading charity benefits, Fashion Cares has raised $8 million for the cause in the past 19 years. It raised more than $1 million this year alone.

The organizers of World Naked Bike Ride 2005 said protests were expected in a number of countries, including Australia, Canada, the United States, Ireland, Italy, Latvia and Israel.

In London, crowds watched about 100 cyclists leave Hyde Park Corner on a journey that took them past some of the capital's most famous landmarks.

Most of the riders stripped naked for the six-mile ride past Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, Covent Garden, Oxford Street and the U.S. Embassy.

Some bikes carried banners reading, "Oil is not a bare necessity but a crude obsession" and "Support the trade justice movement."

"It's a protest against oil dependency and car culture and the overuse of cars for unnecessary reasons," said one of the organizers, Chad Neilson, 24, from north London.

In the Spanish capital, Madrid, dozens of nude cyclists pedaled along major thoroughfares past famous landmarks, drawing surprised looks.

"What we clearly want to show is that we feel naked against the traffic," said one organizer who gave only his first name, Javier. "Every day we have to put up with the traffic, the aggression of the drivers, their speed and bad manners."

Pop superstar Michael Jackson was cleared of all charges on Monday, including child sex abuse, ending a bitter four-month trial that could have sent him to prison for nearly 20 years.

Fans outside the courtroom in central California hugged each other and set free white doves as the jury cleared the pop star on four counts of child molestation, one count of attempted molestation, four charges of giving alcohol to a minor and one charge of conspiracy to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion.

Jackson, 46, a self-styled Peter Pan who had strenuously denied guilt on all 10 counts but did not take the stand in his own defence, dabbed at his eyes with a tissue as the verdict was read to a tense courtroom in Santa Maria, California.

Jackson hugged his lawyers after the verdicts exonerating him were read out. "Mr Jackson, your bail is exonerated and you are released," Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville said.

The "King of Pop" looked stunned and gaunt as he left the courthouse accompanied by members of his family. He briefly held up his hand and blew a kiss at waiting fans as he made a hasty exit into his motorcade without saying a word.

Jackson's defence team also left the court without speaking to the media which had gathered outside from around the world.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for seven days before acquitting Jackson, a former child star who released the best selling pop album of all time in "Thriller". They had to consider testimony by 140 witnesses and some 600 items of evidence.

The case against Jackson was sparked by a controversial 2003 television documentary in which the singer was shown holding hands with his accuser and defended his practice of sharing a bed with young boys.

The prosecution case rested heavily on Jackson's accuser -- a now 15-year-old high school student -- who testified under oath that the pop icon molested him at least twice after nights of heavy drinking at Jackson's Neverland estate.

The prosecution was also allowed to bring in testimony from a number of young men who claimed they had been molested by Jackson when they were boys.

Prosecutor Tom Sneddon, who has been vilified by Jackson's supporters for what they see as a 10-year vendetta against the moonwalking entertainer, defended the decision to charge Jackson; "We did the right thing for the right reasons," he told a news conference.

"My past history with Mr Jackson had absolutely, unequivocally nothing to do with the present case," he said.

Defence attorneys argued that the boy had invented the molestation at the urging of his mother -- who they portrayed as a grifter who targeted celebrities.

Jackson's defence team called on one of the singer's best-known young friends -- "Home Alone" star Macaulay Culkin -- who testified that the charges were ridiculous.

A brief statement released by the jurors said they had "thoroughly and meticulously" studied the evidence in the case and asked the media to respect their privacy.

Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, who has advised the pop star through the case, said the trial had been "an excruciating process", adding that Jackson had been "tried and convicted in the newsroom".

But Jesse Jackson added: "Michael must assess the implications of the conduct that got him into trouble."

A posting on Michael Jackson's Web site, www.mjjsource.com, showed a hand giving the V for victory sign and "innocent" as the words "The truth runs marathons," scrolled across the screen.

It's the first marriage for both the Clueless star and Jarecki, who fronts the California punk band S.T.U.N. The twosome have been dating for eight years.

According to People, 135 friends and family members gathered at a private estate on the shore of Lake Tahoe to watch the couple swap vows in their bare feet

Jarecki, who professes to not knowing his real age (his parents differ on his birthdate, but he says he's thirtysomething), goes by the nom du rock of Christiane J. His band S.T.U.N., short for Scream Toward the Uprising of Non-Conformity, released its major label debut, Evolution of Energy, in 2003.

A decade ago, Silverstone, 28, was Hollywood's "It" girl, coming off the teen thriller The Crush, a troika of Aerosmith videos ("Cryin'," "Amazing" and "Crazy") and her star-making turn as Cher in Clueless. She dated Adam Sandler; she inked a multimillion-dollar production deal with Columbia.

But the deal soon engendered serious backlash, and her career hit the skids after back-to-back high-profile bombs, Excess Baggage, Batman and Robin. By 1997, she was considered a 21-year-old has-been.

"James Bond" girl Denise Richards is refusing to worry about life as a single mother as she prepares to raise her two young daughters without husband Charlie Sheen.

Richards filed for divorce from Sheen in March this year, but he was by her side when she delivered their baby girl Lola Rose on June 1.

As Denise, who has another one-year-old, prepares for raising two young children by herself, she was quoted as telling People magazine: "I am not worried about being a single parent. I just want to be a good one."

Hollywood siren Scarlett Johansson has revealed that her favourite fantasy is to have sex on the back seat of a car.

The Lost In Translation star, reportedly dreams of stripping off in a vehicle and claims that having sex in a car is sexy.

"I do think having sex in a car is sexy," the Sun quoted the 20 year-old actress as telling the US issue of Playboy.

"If I were in a really raunchy frame of mind and thinking of doing something crazy and kinky and sexy, the back seat would be it," she added.

Puerto Rican star Benicio Del Toro has reportedly responded to reports alleging him of getting raunchy with actress Scarlett Johansson in a hotel elevator, insisting that there was not enough time for getting naked in the lift of the eight-storey Chateau Marmount Hotel.

"The Chateau Marmont only has eight floors. I would still be struggling out of my leather jacket by the second floor and wouldn't even have my shirt off at the seventh," the Femalefirst quoted him as saying.

According to last year tabloids, the couple was found 'all over each other' in the lift on the prestigious Los Angeles hotel after the Academy Awards.

Denying the reports, the actor later joked on the alleged lusty tryst and said, "We were making out or having sex or something, which I think is very unsanitary."

PARIS - Tom Cruise popped the question to Katie Holmes at the Eiffel Tower early Friday and then announced the news to the world — they're getting married.


Cruise turned to Holmes: "What did you say, darling? She said, `Yes.' ... I've never actually been to the Eiffel Tower and I just, it's Paris, you know. It's beautiful, a beautiful city. It's very romantic. I'm excited to be here."

No wedding date has been set, Cruise said. "We haven't discussed that — one step at a time."

The couple, who went public with their romance in April, often shared smiles and blushes as Cruise turned to look at Holmes, who was seated nearby. The 26-year-old actress, who was wearing a massive diamond ring on her finger, didn't speak to reporters.

"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," the 42-year-old Cruise said.

"It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all."

At one point, he whispered to Holmes: "Are you OK?" Afterward, they hurried into a car before leaving for a promotional event in Marseilles, southern France.

Cruise was in Paris to promote the French release of "War of the Worlds" next month. Holmes was in London earlier this week to publicize her new movie, "Batman Begins." Both actors have dismissed speculation their romance is a publicity stunt.

"I wish them the happiest marriage that anyone has ever had," said 11-year-old Dakota Fanning, who sat next to Holmes during the news conference. Fanning is Cruise's co-star in the Steven Spielberg film.

It would be the third marriage for Cruise and the first for Holmes. He was married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman; Holmes had been engaged to actor Chris Klein.

Holmes has said she's embracing the Church of Scientology — Cruise's religion. The former star of television's "Dawson's Creek" has said she grew up wanting to marry Cruise.

Asked about her sexual partners Mariah told German Cinema magazine: "I would need less than the fingers of one hand to count them all.

"I have had lots of boyfriends, but I did not have sex with most of them."

She said the lack of sexual partners was not through lack of opportunity.

Mariah said: "If I even look at a man, he immediately thinks: "Oh, she fancies me"."

She added that was why she preferred the company of homosexual men.

Paris Hilton plans to give up public life or family life in two years, by which time she expects to be a appily married mum.

The hotel heiress and a celebrity party fixture has reportedly owed to "retire" from the public eye to start a family with fiancé Paris Latsis and has also confessed to not being a party nimal anymore.

The 24-year-old celebutante reportedly told Newsweek magazine in an interview that she "doesn't enjoy going out anymore" and wants to ease herself out of the media glare.

Hilton says, "I don't enjoy going out anymore," she says in the June 20 issue of the magazine, on newsstands Monday. "It's such a pain. It's everyone saying, 'Let's do a deal! Can I have a picture?' I'm just, like, 'These people are such losers. I can't believe I used to love doing this," Newsweek reports.

Hilton who has become popular for her reality tv show,'The Simple Life, advertising campaigns and even an explicit sex tape, further told Newsweek,"I thought it was cute to play a dumb blonde. On TV, I do it because it's funny. I consider myself a businesswoman and a brand."

Hilton recently became engaged to the 27-year-old Greek shipping heir, Paris Latsis after dating for five months, reports cnn.

Naomi quashes suicide rumours


Australian actress Nomi Watts regrets telling a journalist she had considered suicide before she had her big break in Hollywood - as she insists the comment was taken too literally.

The "21 Grams" star, now 36, admits she was on the brink of dangerous depression during hard times as a struggling actress in Los Angeles but was shocked when she realised the press had latched on to her comment, reports celebrity portal Femalefirst.

She had told a reporter: "I remember driving along Mulholland Drive, thinking, 'Maybe I'll just go over the cliff because I can't take it any more.'".

However, Watts explained: "That wasn't literal. For the record, I am not a suicidal person. But... I felt really badly when I read that and suddenly it's everywhere, 'Naomi Contemplating Suicide.'"
