The year is 1907.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!

************************************

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average wage in 1907 was 22 cents per hour and made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada, was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea Hhdn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

2 out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." ( Shocking? DUH! )

Eighteen percent of households had at least 1 full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. (comparable to Canada NOW lol)

I forwarded this from someone else without typing it myself, and sent it to you and others all over the United States, Canada and the world, in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

And all our grandparents (or great-grandparents, accordingly) had to walk 8 miles to school, uphill both ways, in 18 feet of snow and minus 10 degree weather with only a plastic beach shovel and a mirror on a stick to make sure they were going the right direction while trying to keep their shoes taped together and on their feet before turning around to go back because they forgot their kid sisters' lunch. And they had the flu while they did it!

LOL

In the words of Will Ferrell: "Oh sweet irony!"

Half the kids--well, high school students--that I work with spend their hours with me referring to me by such titles as "Old Dude" and "Father Time". 10 yrs apparently makes me ancient...*sigh*

You know, of course a lot of things are better now, with the amazing technology we have experienced in the last hundred years. But in some ways, we're worse off. Airplanes, the telephone and internet have destroyed our privacy. The lack of censorship in the media has increased the boldness of sex predators, and has taken away the innocence of youth. As an adult, I love the internet...but what will be the effects on our children living in a world where you can type a few words and see two girls having sex while they eat shit out of a cup? Somehow I just don't see that as a positive influence. We have tv, movies, radio, and the internet where we can be constantly entertained in any genre we wish...but we no longer know how to talk to each other. Years ago, a parlor was the place where people gathered to converse...no tv, no radio or stereo...just talk. You actually had to use your brain. I can remember being a kid, and when you walked down the street and a complete stranger told you to mind yourself for whatever reason...you listened. Even though you didn't know him, he was a grownup...and you respected that and did what he said. Nowadays parents are getting sued by their kids...what the fuck is that all about? Kids today are asked to cooperate...when I was a kid, you weren't asked, you cooperated or you got your ass kicked. A hundred years ago a kid that walked around with his pants hanging under his ass would need a new ass, because his old ass would have been beaten off him. People didn't have to lock their doors, and they could leave the keys in the car. And probably most of all..a man could get a job and support his family with his wife at home keeping the house and raising the kids. And they still had money to take vacations and send the kids to college! Nah...other than modern dentistry, I think we've lost a lot in the last hundred years...

But we have discovered new ways to bolster our ego by being pointlessly rude on the internet to strangers who never did or said one bad thing to us.:bah:

Oh, so due to my inproper usage of punctuation and paragraphs you couldn't grasp what I was saying? Sorry, Cman, I didn't know I was being graded on this. It's not like I'm writing a book, here. From now on, I'll try to remember to use proper phrasing on a fucking porn site!!!

Quod erat demonstrandum: The thing speaks for itself.

Si vos ban mihi , vos probo ut EGO sum vox.: If you ban me, you prove that I was right.

In all seriousness, Cman, I am only asking if you will not please be welcoming if a member makes a serious and intelligent reply to your serious and intelligent original post? We have an opening for a good discussion here where we might exchange experiences, insights, opinions, and generally shoot the breeze. I didn't come here to be mean or unpleasant to anyone.

Can we make peace on this?

You're right, I see what you mean, so if you notice I've tried to paragraphize (???) my newest posts. And me and Cman made nice, so all's fine in ...uh, this place.
