Relax.

Open it up and see if there is anything obviously wrong inside.

If so, see if you can fix it.

If not, take it to a trained professional or a smart-ass 14 year old to see if they can recover your files.

If all this fails, line up your hammers by size, and try the old fashioned way.

Recently, I bought a new computer, and when I put my old hard drive in it, I accidentally loosened the ddr memory. I thought I put it back properly ( it clicked into place ) but I didn't.
I felt the way you feel now, only worse. I thought I had killed a new computer.

Why do you think people who fix computers wear thick glasses ?

cmfriend,

Just about any external HD can be taken apart. Look for some small screws on either end, take them out, and then gently pull the carriage (if there is one) out. Take a look at the connections and make sure they're tight and then try the drive again. If it works then your OK. If not then I'd pull the drive totally out and stick it in a desktop and see if it works there.

Lastly, if this makes no sense to you, then take it to a professional. This would only take me a half hour or so to do so it shouldn't be very expensive. There is a good chance that your data is still OK but the drive case has probably been damaged or a connection has come loose.

Thanks for your response. At this point it still does not work. So I will take your advice and take it apart. I was holding back from doing that hoping it would come back on it's own. Usually when i take things apart it never ends up good. I would take it somewhere but i do have quit a bit of personnal info on the drive too, and don't want to trust it with someone else. Thank You.
