This is sort of off topic, but what do you all think of the new off-side rule? Actually, I'm not entirely sure just how it works, my understanding is that a player in an off-side position, with the ball close by, won't be off side if he doesn't actually touch the ball. If this is it, I think it can lead to pretty ridiculous situations, like a player running along side the ball, sheltering it but not touching it, until a team mate comes by, oh dear...well, that's probably an extreme example, but it can happen. The few pre-season games I've watched didn't look all that diferent, we'll have to wait and see, I just think the previous rule was quite balanced.

I thought that they had abandoned this idea. Man why don't they just go back to the old rule, all these details are too much for the minds of the average footballer, and evidently too much for the average governing body member too. :angryrazz

Its still simple; The player behind the last defender is offside if he is deemed to interefere, attempting to interefere or obstruct ANY opposing player(s) attempting to pass him in either direction while he is coming back from his offside position.

Here's an example of how it has changed, the other day I was watching a friendly between Sampdoria and Sporting Lisbon, at one point the ball was crossed to a Samp attacker who was clearly offside (in the old rule), nothing was called, a Sporting defender intercepted it, heading it out for a corner. In this case the offender was rewarded, you could say. What do you think? I guess I'm thinking this way because I'm still in the old mindset

If the Samp attacker was not showing any interest in, or not attempting to play the ball or impede the defender, then he isn't offside. But if the header had gone to a Samp midfielder and the midf'der immediately played the ball to the attacker who has already returned onside, then the attacker will be deemed offside from returning from an offside position.

Its all down to the interpretation of the officials at the end of the day. What you may have caught was an obvious fuck up by the officials ... as they often do.

I hope Chelsea doesn't run away with the league this season. Hopefully Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool can put up a good fight.

I have a feeling if Chelsea have a blip things may get interesting, like how Arsenal was when Man Utd snapped their winning streak.

Hey Conman, only now did I pay attention to your opening post, lol, I got curious as to what "shared" means in this context. As for the discontinued comp., it was the Cup Winners' Cup, of course. Perhaps you were thinking of the old Fairs' Cup, that became the UEFA cup...
