NOTE: I'm not trying to get on an Anti-American rant here and I would appreicate if people would keep this topic related to the Internet and not any other geo-political issue.

=============================================================

This article is fucking ridiculous. I don't know if these articles are credible or not, but its the principal that I'm arguing.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36027
http://www.defectivebydesign.org/node/404

What astounds me about this article is not that the RIAA is gay, but that the United States somehow continues to believe that they own the Internet and as such, have the power to shut it down. I've mentioned this so many times in the past and it just keep coming up.

Are they fucking retarded? Statistically, the highest percentage of users may be American, but that is simply a quality of life issue. If the majority of Chinese could afford computer, then China would be the highest.

FACT: The US invented TCP/IP, which is merely the protocol used to network computers together. The invention of the web, email, newsgroups or anything else, should be treated as separate.

FACT: A British born gentleman invented the WWW, not an American (Tim Berners Lee)

SO STOP THINKING YOU OWN THE FUCKING INTERNET!!! EVEN IF YOU MADE 100 DIFFERENT LAWS AND BANNED ALL INTERNET USAGE IN THE USA, IT WOULDN'T MATTER BECAUSE IT WOULD STILL EXIST IN THE REST OF THE WORLD!!!

GAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

ok, one quick thing to get off my chest, it's not all americans doing this, it's just the rich big-whigs and the damn music and movie industry who is mainly doing this. And the US Government, but that could be a ten-page post about the government, so i won't go into that. (just the fact that the guy heading the council about the internet thinks its all just a series of tubes is truly sad)

But I do agree that this is getting worse and worse. I have found that, in most cases, those who get stuff off the internet without paying for it, usually are trying it out. And most true downloaders don't use their own ip, or anything that could be traced to them. So the way the RIAA is getting their info about the user downloading gives them little to no true info. And, since they aren't using legal methods to get that info, they themselves should be held accountable. And, the judges that hear the case need to be technologically savvy enough to know what is being said, and allow the defendant to make their case. It's bullshit. And just the fact that they are picking on people who can't defend themselves monetarily should be enough to piss people off.

I have many American friends and I don't have really have anything against the American people. I know its not your fault, its the govt. Regardless of who's fault it is, the perception is still there and thats why your intl. reputation is crap.

I have many different things against the US as a country. I count my blessings and thank god every day that I do not have to live in that country. The more retarded it gets, the less I even want to VISIT the US. I've been there several times, but honestly, I don't have any plans of going there in the near future.

I see that becoming a growing trend globally and I predict that your tourism and possibly immigration industries are going to get hit really hard. People are just going to get fed up and not even want to go there. (not including dirty mexicans)

I would much rather go to Europe instead. My last couple trips were there and my next one probably will be too.

I agree with all that. Sometimes, actually most of the time, i wish all the politicians would go away, it would help out alot. And we need to stop spending 300 billion on defense, when one or two nukes will do more than enough. (which we don't need anyway) If we put all that towards education and aid to other countries, things would be alot better.

But back to the topic, the RIAA and MPAA need to stop this shit. If you make a good product, people would buy it. And honestly, a lot of the times, when i download, it's only for trial. If the movie is good, i'll shell out the $15 for it, or if the music is good and available, i'll pay for it (well, some of the time). And now that they are going after poorer people because they know they don't have the money to pay for the lawyers (who are worse than some of these oil companies sometimes), it pisses me off more. They don't look any better in the public and all they are going for is a little extra $200 that they need to wipe their asses with.

I agree with you Cman, and I live in this country. From Sweden originally, so I have a bit of an outside view of the world. Thing that bothers me the most is how the majority of the people in this country (not all, so don't power up the flame thrower) are so clueless about the rest of the world! One guy actually told me the day of Sept. 11 that we should nuke all of Saudi Arabia!! Are you F$#@ng kidding me?? I told the moron that country is your biggest ally in the Mid-East! Plus the fact that in 10 years, we will probably all have microchips inserted in our neck's to track all our moves. But hey, it's for our own "safety," right?

As far as thinking that they "Own" the internet, you are exactly right! Even though Al Gore did "invent it!"  I always love checking out http://thepiratebay.org and looking at their Legal Threats. In no way am I condoning the download of free media, but the fact that these companies think they can bully anybody, anywhere in the world makes me love the fact that this guy is sticking it to them. Reminds me of years ago when the McDonalds Corp (ie. your weekly calorie/sodium intake in one meal) tried to sue the original McDonalds clan in Scotland to stop using their name!! Unbelievable!!

Yeah, it seemed like a lot of people did that, including me, before I opened my eyes to the world...BUt that was pretty bad thinking, and it's not like the US didn't have a hand in that itself, but that's a whole different thing.

Sadly, that is true probably. In 2008, we're all supposed to get ID cards that we wear around our neck, proposed by someone I used to like, John McCain.

I always think of this quote: "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."-Benjamin Franklin

I think you're all idiots and to prove it I'm going to switch off the Internet right now!

... OK, any minute now... gotta wait for the traffic to clear... Just a few more seconds...

Damn! What's wrong with the switch? Aw Hell, I gotta send it to the shop. Be back in a little while. But don't download any music, remember I'm watching you! :skeezy:

P.S. Cobra, I do too!

Yeah, he's right. I was trying really hard for this not to get off track lol. The point of this thread was me raging about the US thinking it owns the internet.

Its like how they think they own outer space or the moon, just because they've been there a bunch of times. Weren't the Russians in space first? lol

telling people to not use the internet is like telling them not to breathe in the open, if you want to breathe you can buy (read MoNeY) a breathing-apparatus
The internet is a collection of pc's connected into a giant web. I see it as a lake or sea and if you stick your finger in it you can hear whats happening at the other side of the moon.
Those pc's are individual use. the communication is (unlike mail by postal services) open (everybody can see it) They warn you of this

If anybody sees anything not mend for him to see and he keeps looking then he is a voyeur.

However it is possible to shut down the net
The former networksolutions.com controlled all IP adresses in the world
I don't know how this is today but i know that there is one single administrative office that can shut a DNS-server down.
I don't know if that company is USA

Network Solutions doesn't control the internet. They are in charge of the .COM and .NET top level domain names. What you say is partially true, but you should learn more about it haha. I know all about DNS and the structure of the internet, because I studied it in college.

The entire theory behind the internet to begin with was to set it up so it COULDN'T be shut down. If one city was nuked, for example, the information would still be available elsewhere. Thats why the US Govt developed ARPANET.

Even if the US shut down their backbone routers, there are still many other backbones around the world that are out of the US jurisdiction, so thats why I say they wouldn't be able to shut it down completely.

The main entry point to North America is in Newfoundland, which is a Canadian province, so the US can do whatever it wants, we will still have internet in Canada haha ;)

We may be hosted by the same company, but we're not on the same server, because I have my own dedicated server. Just because our IP addresses are similar, means very little.

I would be careful with what you say. You think you are an expert, but you're not lol.

Didn't know how to behave and was banned
still dont know how to behave but still learning
I think i don't even know what a dedicated server is so i was just reacting on a new find browsing the Internet.
Will try to rethink my reactions before posting

its ok to express your opinions, but you should be humble about it and realize that you might be wrong sometimes.

i don't know everything either, so i never act like an expert. its better if people think you are stupid sometimes, so they don't expect too much lol
